In 1942 General Sir Charles J.C. Grant, KCB, KCVO, DSO of Pitchford Hall donated a large amount of material to the National Library of Wales, which included war correspondence, literary papers, and nearly 1000 deeds with a brief descriptions of them. For the Ottley family the library provided a description as follows:
“The Ottley family held the manor of Pitchford from 1473 to 1807. Thirteen generations of the Ottleys of Pitchford ended with the death of Adam Ottley (1745-1807), a few weeks after the death of his father, Thomas in 1807. The estate then passed by will to Charles Cecil Cope Jenkinson, 3rd Earl of Liverpool. The 3rd Earl died without male issue and the estate was divided up between his three daughters. Pitchford passed to his youngest daughter, Louisa (1814-1887) who married John Cotes (1799-1874). On his death, Pitchford passed to his second son, Charles James Cotes. He died unmarried and Pitchford passed to his sister, Victoria Alexandria (1840-1918), who married secondly Lieut-General Sir Robert Grant (1837-1904). On Victoria's death, Sir Charles Grant became the owner of Pitchford.
“The Visitation of Shropshire,” taken in the 1623, was published and titled “The Publications of The Harleian Society,” Volume XXIX, in 1889. This includes additions from the pedigrees of Shropshire gentry taken by the Heralds in 1569 and 1584. A CD of this can be purchased by Quintin Publications, Florida (QuintinPublications.com CD270). The pedigree of Thomas as indicated in the visitation is as follows:
Georgius Oteley de Oteley,
Phillippus Oteley de Oteley,
Thomas Oteley de Pichford, 3rd son, purchased Pitchford Manor in 1473, died 1486,
Willimus Oteley de Pichford, Sheriff 1500, died 26 Sep 1529,
Adam Oteley de Pichford, died 16 Oct 1578,
Richardus Oteley de Pichford,
Thomas Oteley de Pichford, living 1623.
We know that Pitchford Manor was no longer in the family of the ancient Pychefords soon after Ralph de Pichford died in 1303. And tracking down who owned the manor will be a challenge from that point up to the purchase by Thomas Ottley in 1473. However, the National Library of Wales has a brief description of the deeds from Sir Charles Grant, which gives an earlier ownership of Pitchford Manor almost three decades prior to Thomas Ottley’s purchase! It is as follows:
